Why participate in an exchange program?
Participating in an exchange program allows MU students to spend a semester abroad at another university to diversify and internationalize their study experience.
Embarking on a student exchange program opens up a world of possibilities. It's not just about attending classes in a different country, different university, and different environment; it can be a life-changing experience that can enrich the academic journey and shape students’ personality and perspectives. Being immersed in a new culture, students gain a broader overview, develop a deeper understanding of global issues, and cultivate invaluable life skills.
Exchange will foster personal growth, independence, and resilience, while also expanding professional and academic networks. It's an adventure that will bring new friendships, unforgettable memories, and a sense of global citizenship. A student exchange abroad truly enhances the student experience, adds value to any degree program, and prepares students for a diverse and interconnected world.

Planning an exchange semester
WHEN TO GO?
Undergraduates are advised to plan an exchange in the 3rd, 4th, or 5th semester of their studies. Graduate students can choose to go on exchange in any semester of their studies (except for the first), but it is advised to do so towards the end of the study program.CREDIT TRANSFER
When planning courses in advance, it is advised to take core courses at MU as far as possible before going on exchange. At the partner universities, students are most likely able to take courses equivalent to enrichment courses.
Before embarking on a semester abroad, students select their classes at the host institution, which will then be approved for credit transfer by both a faculty member and the Dean of the study program. All pre-approved classes which are successfully passed during the exchange semester will be transferred to the student record on return.
TUITION FEES
Students will continue paying their tuition fees as usual to MU and will not be charged tuition fees by the host institution. There may be some variable administrative fees (for example for student cards, student union fees, printing) to pay to the host institution.
TRAVEL & ACCOMODATION
It is the students’ responsibility to make travel arrangements, look for accommodation, ensure they have full insurance coverage and to apply for a visa, if necessary. In case of doubt, partner institutions can usually answer questions related to these topics as well.
APPLY FOR AN EXCHANGE
- Browse the list of exchange institutions and make a selection of the top three favourites.
- Apply internally at MU. Students are required to submit a letter of motivation and an up-to-date CV. Students should ideally have a minimum GPA of 75. The application will be reviewed by the International Studies Coordinator and the faculty member responsible for the partner institution.
- Successful students are selected for nomination to the host institution, based on their application, profile and number of applicants. If a student has not been successful in getting their first-choice destination, they can be nominated to the second or third choice. At this point, students may start to select their classes.
- Nominated students will also need to submit an application to the host institution directly. After students have been nominated by MU, the host institution shares details about the application and course registration procedure.
