The Foundation Programs offer students the opportunity to improve their English and deepen their knowledge in basic subject areas that are required for undergraduate study.
It is possible to study a Foundation Program without continuing on to study an undergraduate degree at Modul University Vienna, however our Foundation programs are specifically designed to prepare students for our bachelor programs. If you're a non-EU/EEA applicant and plan to study only a Foundation Program at MU, please be aware that online study is the eligible option for you.
If you wish to study a Bachelor program with MU Vienna, please apply for a Bachelor program as you may still be accepted on the condition of first completing our one-semester Foundation Program. In this case, you do not need to apply separately or again for the Foundation Program.

If you wish to study a Bachelor’s program at MU, but are not directly eligible or prefer a preparatory semester, begin your application directly for your desired Bachelor’s program in the Application Portal. Our admissions team will discuss your options with you during the online interview and add the completion of the foundation program as a condition to your admission to one of our bachelor programs.

*Your research proposal can either be for a research subject suggested by a member of our faculty or your own area of interest. In either case, the proposal should contain a short summary of the current state of scientific knowledge, the research question and its relevance, a concrete description of the planned methodology, including data, materials used and statistical evaluation, a sketch of potential results and the anticipated limitations of the conclusions. This will typically take 5 to 10 pages.

International Schools Curriculum
If you have attended an international school in any country and followed an American, British, or International Baccalaureate curriculum, please review the admissions criteria specific to your curriculum below.
International Baccalaureate
For direct entry the student must provide an IBDP (International Baccalaureate Diploma) with min. 24 points. One of the following scores for Mathematics is required:
- Math Studies score of minimum 5 points, or
- Math Standard Level score of minimum 4 points, or
- Analysis and Approaches SL minimum 4 points or HL minimum 3 points, or
- Applications and Interpretation SL minimum 4 points or HL minimum 3 points
In case the Mathematics score is lower than the required points the student must complete our Mathematics Foundation course. This course represents an additional class in Mathematics which can be taken throughout the first semester of studies.
In case the student graduates with IB Certificates instead of the IBDP, then the student will be eligible to enrol to one of our bachelor programs based on the following conditions: completing our one semester Foundation Programs in Business or Technology, as well as an entrance examination. The student can apply directly for the bachelor's program of their choice and will receive a conditional admission.
Students following the IB Careers Programme are welcome to also apply for a Bachelor’s program and their profile will be assessed individually to determine if the Foundation course is required prior to acceptance onto the degree program.
British System
The student must complete 3 general, independent subjects at GCE (A Level) with a minimum grade of C
- Two of these must be either a Language, History, Geography, Social studies/Politics, Business/Economics, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Computer Science.
- The third subject must be independent of the other 2 subjects from either the list above or below subjects: Art & design, Drama and Theatre, Music, Philosophy, Physical Education, Psychology, Religious Studies
In case applicants have 3 A-Levels that are not independent of each other, an entrance examination or additional classes may be offered following an admission assessment.
In case the student graduates with less than 3 A-Levels, then the student will be eligible to enrol to one of our bachelor programs based on the following conditions: completing our one semester Foundation Programs in Business or Technology, as well as an entrance examination. The student can apply directly for the bachelor's program of their choice and will receive a conditional admission.
American System
The student must complete a High School Leaving Certificate with a minimum GPA score of 3.0. Additionally, we require either:
- 4 APs (including math and a language), or
- SAT test results with the following scores, or
New test: A score of at least 1360 points shall be shown in the sections Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing. With a score of 1220 points, the evidence of supplementary achievements to the extent of 1 academic year is required. Alternatively, foundation program for 1 semester will be recommended.
Old test: For high schools diplomas before March 2016, the following scores are applied: A score of 1300 points in the sections Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing. With 1150 points the evidence of supplementary achievements to the extent of one academic year is required.
- ACT min. 29 points (composite score).
With 23 points (for diplomas up to May 2014) or 25 points (afterwards), the evidence of supplementary achievements to the extent of one academic year is required. Alternatively, foundation program for 1 semester will be recommended.
In case the student graduates with a lower score or decides to solely complete the High School Leaving Certificate, then the student will be eligible to enrol to one of our bachelor programs based on the following conditions: completing our one semester Foundation Programs in Business or Technology, as well as an entrance examination. The student can apply directly for the bachelor's program of their choice and will receive a conditional admission.

Online Application
Guide to our Online Application Portal
There is a non-refundable 100€ application fee due for all applicants. This is deducted from your first tuition fee invoice should your admission be successful.Application Review & Interview
Your application will be reviewed by our admissions team to assure eligibility. Once they are satisfied, you will be sent an invitation to book an interview slot with one of our Admission Coordinators. For PhD applicants, your interview will take place with both an Admission Coordinator and the Dean of the PhD program. The interview will be conducted on Microsoft Teams.
During your interview, you will be asked about your application and motivation to study at MU Vienna.
We are looking for motivated and enthusiastic students who are engaging and conduct good conversational English. This is also your chance to ask any questions you might have.
The relevant Dean for the program you are applying for, will then evaluate your application in line with what our Admissions Coordinator has recommended and a decision on your admission will be made.Admission Decision
You will be notified by email of the decision made by the Admission committee. Successful acceptance will either be ‘full’ or ‘conditional’. If you have been conditionally accepted, you may be asked to submit further documents (for example; final high school certificates and transcripts that you may not have access to yet) or be asked to complete a Foundation semester or pre-requisite courses.
TRANSFER CREDITS
Course and examination credits obtained at an external higher education institution (including, only English taught subjects from Austrian vocational high schools with a business or hospitality focus, universities, colleges, or any other higher education institutions) may be eligible for credit transfer according to an equivalency evaluation that is based on a review of course contents, outline, methods, and final grade.
Important information: New students have to first submit an application through our portal for your desired study program. After you submit your application and secure an interview. Once you are accepted, sign your study contract and make your first tuition payment, you can proceed with your application for credit transfer as outlined below. The reduction from your credit transfer will be applied to your second tuition payment.
Practical experience acquired by the student prior to enrollment may be credited towards an internship when in accordance with the respective study regulations and the requirements outlined in the Internship Manual.
How to Apply for Credit Transfer
Step 1: Fill out the Application for Credit Transfer and attach the following supporting documents:
A) Credit Transfer for Academic Courses:
Credit Transfers from Austrian Vocational Schools: Academic Transcript of Record (Zeugnis) listing all courses credit transfer is requested for;
Credit Transfers from national and international higher education institutions: Academic Transcript of Record listing all courses for which a credit transfer is requested and respective course syllabi (i.e., course description referring to the course title, weekly hours, course type, ECTS and expected learning outcomes for the respective course).
B) Credit Transfer for Practical Experience:
A work certificate or reference letter from your employer confirming where you worked, your duties and the time period of work;
An internship report;
A project report (only for requests seeking credit of full 900 hour internship);

Step 2: Send your signed form and all supporting documents to the Academic Office prior to the commencement of your studies at MU.
Important: It is recommended to submit your application for credit transfer as soon as you have been successfully admitted to your study program at MU and as soon as you can attach all supporting documents. Incomplete requests, and requests submitted after the deadline, will not be considered.
Step 3: The Dean of your study program will assess your request for credit transfer. Within a few days, you will receive notification from the Academic Office on whether your application for credit transfer has been approved.

Our university provides the opportunity to start your studies 2 times per year. If you are thinking to take a gap after finishing your studies or are completing your degree later, you will not have to wait for the traditional fall intake! MU offer the following enrollment opportunities:

We operate on a rolling basis for our application process, with applications for each intake opening one year prior to the start of the desired intake.

The short answer is no. All students have to upload the required documents in the online portal and pay this fee as a final step to have their application submitted for review.
Our application fee ensures the thorough and thoughtful processing of your submission.
Our Admissions department works tirelessly to process hundreds of applications from across the globe, and some students never take their acceptance letter to the next stage.
So, our fee covers the administrative commitment to our most scholastic applicants.
And like many things in life, there is no guarantee of an outcome, and it should be noted there is a little risk in each decision, since we never know until we try. We guarantee that all accepted students who enroll at MU will receive back the application fee.
For these reasons, we uphold our Application Fee to ensure everyone receives fair and unbiased reviews and attention.
The interview is an approximately 30-minute (UG) or 45-minute (PG) meeting with the Admissions coordinator. They will ask you about your motivation, your background, your documents and other information based on your application. It is important to be yourself – be natural, stay away from memorized scripts, and be ready to think and respond in the moment to the conversation. The interview is MU’s chance to get to know its future students, so we want to get insights into your personality and your potential.
You should be ready to have your camera on during the video call on Microsoft teams, and make sure that your interview setting allows for the admissions team to clearly see your face.
Like most Austrian universities, Modul University Vienna does not have its own student residence, instead we have a contract with some local private student accommodation providers. Our choice of partners includes very diverse offers and price ranges to fit different lifestyle needs.
Students can apply directly through MU for one of our dorm partners, WIHAST. If you are interested in this option, our Student Services Coordinators will share with you an application form after you are enrolled. The deadline for applying to WIHAST through MU’s internal application is 15 December for the Spring Intake and 15 July for the Fall Intake.
For all other partners, students need to apply individually through the provider’s website.

BBA Tourism, Hotel Management and Operations
The 4-year BBA program is specifically designed for those students with career aspirations in the international hotel industry. The program offers an additional year of study during which the focus is placed on operational aspects of the industry, including practical training in kitchen and service operations. This program also offers a global study option:
You can study 3 years in Vienna, at Modul University, and 1 year in New York City, at New York City College of Technology. The practical courses will be undertaken throughout the year spent in New York. Your studies will take place across two vibrant and globally diverse campuses: one nestled in Vienna's 19th district, renowned for its vineyards, and the other situated in Brooklyn, New York's trendy district.
You will also engage with the practical facets of the industry by undertaking a 6-month internship. This opportunity allows you to enhance your skills and discover your specialization. The internship can be carried out in Vienna or any location worldwide.
BBA Tourism and Hospitality Management
The 3-year program has a more generic approach towards hotel and tourism management. However, the core courses are the same for both programs, making the three-year program suitable for students with prior vocational education, as well as those who want to embark on a career in the general tourism industry. This program also allows you to choose a specilization in your last year of studies in the area of Tourism and Event Management or Hotel Management. You will gain practical experience through a 6-month internship, and can also opt for a 1-semester exchange abroad.
This program also presents the opportunity to complete your studies in 4 years instead of 3, with the benefit of spending 2 years in Hong Kong. You will gain 2 degrees throughout the 4 years: your BBA Tourism and Hospitality Management from Modul University Vienna, as well as a bachelor's degree from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, School of Hotel and Tourism Mananagement:
Opting to complete the program in 4 years entails a 2-year experience in Vienna, followed by another 2 years in Hong Kong. This presents a great prospect to attain two valuable degrees, leveraging Modul's extensive expertise in Vienna's tourism sector and benefiting from the globally acclaimed program at Hong Kong Polytechnic University's School of Hotel and Tourism Management, recognized as the best program worldwide for Hospitality and Tourism Management by the Shanghai Ranking.
